When Indian women broke stereotypes!

When Indira Gandhi became the first Prime Minister of India, history was made as it was for the first time a woman had been appointed to the topmost position in a male-dominated country of ours. With time, many women like Kiran Bedi, Padmashree Warrior and..etc. have made India proud in their respective fields, but there were certain fields where there was a no entry for women in India. But, with modernisation and a strong will power, the women power has made a successful debut at these ‘No entry zones.’ Below is a list of these first timers whose achievements have indeed marked a revolution in modern India.

Manzil Saini becomes first woman SSP of UP capital Lucknow

Popular as ‘Lady Singham’, Etawah SSP Manzil Saini has become the first woman SSP of Lucknow and the first ever woman district police chief in the capital of UP. This news was confirmed by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. From her entry in the police force, the 2005 batch IPS officer has grabbed headlines for her swag and honest commitment for work. The notorious Amit Kumar kidney racket was cracked by this mastermind in a few months of her first posting as SP Moradabad in 2008. This lady was also admired for taking action against illegal use of party flags by Samajwadi Party workers in four-wheelers. Saini, who was then the SSP of Etawah, had also penalized the workers for having tinted windows for their cars. Saini, who has studied physics from St. Stephen’s College, later received a gold medal during her curriculum at Delhi School of Economics. Lastly, this dashing lady is also the first married woman IPS officer who is a mother of two.

Sapper Shanti Tigga

35-year-old Tigga was the first Indian woman to join the jawans in the Indian Army. Tigga, a mother of two, who joined the 969 Railway Engineer Regiment of Territorial Army in 2011, had a jawan calibre that was no less than her male counterparts. In an unfortunate abduction, she was found dead. Though having a short life, her debut innings as the first jawan of India is indeed inspiring.

Chhavi Rajawat

Heard of sarpanch and their sarpanch raj in the rural India, but ever heard of a woman sarpanch who is also an MBA graduate? Then you must check out this girl Chhavi Rajawat. Being the first woman sarpanch in India with an MBA degree, her achievements are really inspiring for today’s youth. Chhavi gave up her lucrative corporate job with one of India's biggest telecom firms for becoming the sarpanch of Soda, a village situated 60 kms from Jaipur. Since, then she has been dedicatedly serving the people there. With implementation of projects like rainwater harvesting, imparting toilet facilities and many more, she has enhanced the village and the life of the people residing there.

Asia’s First Woman Bus Driver

While some make millions by pursuing their passion, but for some the path of earning a livelihood turns into their passion. Same happened in Vasanthakumari’s life, who started driving bus for money as it was the sole way of earning a livelihood for her, but later discovered her passion for driving. Having been driving buses for about 23 years now, she is renowned to be Asia’s first woman bus driver. She joined the bus driver crew at the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation in March 1993, as the first woman bus driver. Though being the first woman to drive a government transport, she did not enjoy any special concessions. Currently, the mother of two, she still drives on the Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram route regularly. Aiming to start a driving school for women, she has won the recent Raindropss Women Achiever Award and will be retiring in April 2017.

India’s First Female Fighter Pilots

Now, like the army, bus driver or a Qazi, the fighter pilot post was still reserved for the men in India. But these three women were slated to break the stereotype. Avani Chaturvedi, Mohana Singh and Bhawana Kanth are those three women who will receive the honour of flying fighter planes in India. The trio, who is currently training at an air force base in the southern Indian state of Telangana, will qualify to conquer the skies this summer. Like Avani Chaturvedi’s statement that it is a dream for everybody to fly, these three have indeed made us proud and also opened doors for women to shine as fighter pilots in the near future.

Well, these ladies are indeed an inspiration for the Indian women to break stereotypes and dare to enter the zone that finds woman incapable of pursuing it.
