Today marks the 86th birthday of the first super-fast train of India, the Deccan Queen. Being one of the longest running trains in India, this lady is in no mood to budge and has been running head strong from Pune to Mumbai and back to the pavilion. Having been started to bridge the gap between Pune and Mumbai, this train is the second home for those commuters who travel this long distance daily. Well, there is something special about this train which has never run on steam power, that people book tickets a day or two in advance to embrace its journey.
Out of curiosity, one day I checked out the train timing and thought not for a second and boarded the train from Pune. After helping myself with a ticket, amidst that long queue, I finally found some life by the time I realized I was standing first in the queue to board one of the bogies of the train. Like a boss, I entered the train and managed to get a seat near the window. But, my happiness was short-lived as one man asked me to get up as it was his seat. Like a puzzled and angry kid, I stared at him for a second, until the other passengers told that he is a privileged commuter. Puzzled, I had no option but to get up. Later, as the train left the station, one guy standing next to me explained me, post which, I realized that the people who have been traveling for years are the privileged ones and deserve every benefit first.
Having made-up my mind to travel the route standing, I stood like that great wall of China amidst that silent chatter, where you could only hear voices of paper and mobile phones as people were immersed in their laptops and newspapers. Feeling depressed by that dead silence, I regretted my decision to travel by this train, until that smell reached my nose. It was the smell of coffee, tea and a delicious breakfast that freshened my mood. The staff there was offering a stomach-filling breakfast. But, here also, being privileged member mattered as they were given first priority over the newbies. And we were for the sake of formality, asked while the waiters were almost departing. But, I finally helped myself with a cup of coffee by asking the waiter for one.
The cup of coffee was the much needed revamp for me and trust me it was tasty and hot. Also, sipping some coffee amidst those passing by ghats, was a mesmerizing experience. Standing near the door, I could sense the freshness in the air as the train moved faster towards CST.
During my return journey, when I boarded the Deccan Queen, I was surprised to see the transition in the atmosphere. The dead silence of morning was replaced by a chatter of people, who were immersed in their laptops in the morning. Every coach had a different story or discussion. Some were humming songs, while some were playing cards and ludo. The man sitting next to me was telling about his 40-year long journey as a dedicated Deccan Queen traveler and the changes he had witnessed in his long journey. Now, I was getting close to the reason of what made this train so special for their travelers, who considered it as an important part of their life.
Now, as the train’s reverse journey continued, it was food time again. Tell you something, the dining car is the gem of this train. It serves a lot of different simple delicious food like toasts, omelets, pizzas etc., and guess what, it is served hot and in clean cutlery. The travelers choose to eat in the dining car because of the variety available at affordable rates and this arrangement resembles the British style. I had heard till now, but today witnessed people traveling till Karjat only for the food served here. The hygiene, maintenance and pantry of the train are an inspiration for other trains to elevate their hygiene quotient. For its extreme hygiene and quality of service, this train has received the ISO certification, which is received by only two trains, the other being
Throughout the journey, I realized, the Deccan Queen is a habit for its regular travelers and their second home. Also, in the train, I witnessed many friendships that are still going strong after years. The bond they share is priceless.
Thus, as the train reached Pune at 8:30 pm, I could hear goodbyes of people, who were heading towards their homes only to come back tomorrow. I could feel the emotion and connect the train paved to among its commuters. Also, I realized that had I got to travel daily by the Deccan Queen, then I would have been lucky to be a part of the family and witness every emotion and fun as well the transition from newbie to a privileged commuter.
Thus, as this train turns 86 today, we hope the Deccan Queen runs for ages to come and making bonds firm during its journey. Happy Birthday Queen! Definitely, one of it's kind.
