The angry lash out at AIB fame Tanmay Bhat, has once again raised the question if we Indians have become intolerant to humour? Now when Tanmay made that face swap video on snap chat, less he knew that it would be taken in the wrong strand by both Bollywood and twitter. Well, ok he did poke fun at the god of cricket ‘Sachin Tendulkar’ and singing legend ‘Lata Mangeshkar’, but was it that demeaning that people started lashing out at him Now, when twitter trolled him, it could be understood but when the B’town also took his class, it was shocking and I wondered if Lata di was ever offended by this snap chat video? Well, this is not the first instance when humour has evoked anger. Below is a list of a few, whose jokes had rubbed the wrong way.
Shahrukh Khan irked Manoj Kumar
Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan had once landed in the soup for making fun of veteran actor Manoj Kumar, who did not receive it well. Actually, against SRK's 2007 hit, Om Shanti Om, Manoj Kumar filed a plea to delete some scenes from the film, but it didn’t happen and on the contrary, the film was released in 2013 in Japan with all the scenes intact. This made Manoj Kumar lose his cool and file a case against Shah Rukh. Well, the scenes actually showed the famous signature style of Manoj Kumar in a humorous way and had nothing to hurt his self-respect as he said, "I don't have any personal clash with Shah Rukh Khan. He is a nice person, but when it comes to my self-respect, then I can't compromise on it."
Kiku Sharda’s arrest
It all started with Kiku Sharda mimicking Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan during the last week of the show Comedy Nights with Kapil. Kiku, who played the role of Palak in the show, was arrested and detained for mimicking. The followers of the Dera Sacha Sauda leader were angry with Kiku for making mimicry of their Godman. With an initial custody of 14 days and the then granted bail, Kiku was again arrested for his behaviour and another case was filed against him. Well, even we mimic our favourite actors among friends. There are so many trolls of actors and politicians, then what big deal was a mimicry man?
Kapil Sharma angered the nurses
Kiku’s companion and famous comedian of the country Kapil Sharma is not foreign to such a criticism. On his new show, Kapil recently made fun of the nurses and their profession. He also passed derogatory remarks against them. Well, said in a humorous way, this act of his, attracted protest from the nurses of government Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. They not only staged a protest against stand-up comedian and actor Kapil Sharma for depicting nursing profession in a bad light but also submitted a written complaint to the police station. Ok, Kapil might have thrown his humorous googlies, but was it really putting the nursing profession in a bad light? Or it actually depicted the bad side of the profession? Whatever it may be, but Kapil how dare you do that in a democratic and secular country of ours?
Infamous AIB roast
Now, who doesn’t know that infamously hilarious AIB Roast of Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, which also comprised of Tanmay Bhatt apart from his AIB squad and Karan Johar. The show that broke the internet wasn’t received well by all. While the censor board criticised it for vulgarity, Aamir Khan also strongly condemned it. Also, Pune police had lodged an FIR against 14 people, including Ranveer, Arjun, KJo and the AIB team. Added fuel to the fire was MNS, who ordered for an apology. Well, if you ask me, the show was full of slangs and was an abusive ride. But, that what we call a roast and it is famous in the West, then why don’t we Indians take humour lightly?
Aseem Trivedi had to face sedition charges
The famous political cartoonist had to taste the charges of sedition for his cartoon, which he had displayed during the Anna Hazare protest in the Bandra-Kurla complex (BKC) in November 2011. Known for voicing his protest against the corrupt politicians through his humorous cartoons, Aseem’s cartoon depicted cartoons showed the Parliament as a commode and the National Emblem with wolves instead of lions. Somewhere his cartoon depicted the truth of Indian politics but didn’t go well with Amit Katarnayea, a legal advisor for a Mumbai-based NGO. Based on his complaint, Trivedi was charged with sedition. The cartoonist, who stood headstrong and had no regrets had told the court, I do not even remember on which sketches of mine the police have arrested me. The police have arrested me for expressing my anger against the government. And if I am an accused by expressing my views, then yes in that case I prefer to be behind bars than to enjoy my freedom in this way." Well, his statement makes sense as being a part of a democratic country, we have the right to have an opinion as well as express anger or humour. Trivedi was charged with sedition under Section 124 (A) of the Indian Penal Code. The cartoonist was also charged under the IT Act and the 1971 National Emblem Act.
Humour is a part of freedom of expression and as a democracy, we have a right to voice our opinions. Also, jokes are a means of entertainment then why do we Indians get emotional and outrage over it? I feel Rahul Gandhi is the most democratic person then, as he never gets angry and is trolled every now and then. These people should take lessons from him.
