Remember the ‘haldi doodh’ that once grandma made in our childhood? Eww.. I hated it. But granny said it was a health drink and poured it down my throat, which I drank making faces. But, the ‘haldi doodh’ of ours, which we disliked as a child, has taken the West by a storm and is referred to as '2016's milk of choice' or 'Golden milk'. The foreigners are cherishing the turmeric doodh, which has got a little make-over there, in the form of Turmeric Latte.
Turmeric Latte – When turmeric blended with coffee.
Heard of a coffee latte, maple latte, coconut and iced latte, but when the words ‘Turmeric Latte’ fell on my ears, I was puzzled like many reading this article might be. But, yes Turmeric Latte, is the new hot sensation abroad and the foreigners are enjoying this drink derived from the Indian heritage ingredient ‘Turmeric.’
Well, then what is actually special about this Turmeric Latte, which is actually our traditional ‘haldi doodh’? The only difference between ‘haldi doodh’ and turmeric latte is that the original milk is replaced with coconut, cashew and almond milk for the lactose intolerant, and cold pressed turmeric juice is added rather than the turmeric root powder. Wow, sounds yummy, doesn’t it? Now, we know why the foreigners have gone crazy over it. Apart from the taste, the health benefits attract the consumers more because it is an anti-inflammatory alternative to caffeine drinks. Well, it’s not me but the online searches confirming of how much popular it is in the US, wherein the demand for turmeric has increased by 56%.
Thus, while we Indians are going gaga over the international haute cuisine, the people in the West seem to be in love with our Indian food. But wait, the turmeric latte is not the only thing where our turmeric has been used; turmeric biscuits, turmeric tea and many other such dishes are storming the West. We have listed some cool turmeric food delicacies that are a new trend back in the West.
Turmeric tea:
Now tea is not an Indian drink, but turmeric is and when this hot peppery powder is added to tea, one would get a spiced hot tea. Well, sounds weird, but it is actually one of the hottest thing there and foreigners are sipping it like a chilled mug of beer. So next time, you are hosting a house party, why not try a mug of turmeric tea instead of our good old liquor and it’s ok even if you have more. Enjoy the healthy hangover.
Almond butter and turmeric cookies:
We all love eating those crispy cookies stuffed with almonds and some butter. But, what if a little turmeric was added to the cookie mixture? Sounds new? Well, don’t worry, the hot turmeric will not spoil your cookies, but will make them extremely delicious. You can also replace almond with honey for a new flavor. Now, if you don’t trust me then do tour to the US, where people are actually feasting on the brand new Almond butter and turmeric cookies.
The turmeric Cocktail:
Well wait, as the name suggests, we aren’t offering a glass full of liquid turmeric with some ice added to it. Actually, we were talking about adding some spice to your routine cocktails. A pinch of haldi, when added to your cocktail, will not only add to its flavor but also give it a brand new color. And guess what, it is extremely healthy.
The turmeric smoothie:
I know the name smoothie might have made you crave for having one and you may imagine the chocolate smoothie, orange smoothie etc. But, do you know a new member has joined the smoothie squad? And it is the turmeric smoothie. Now, while making a smoothie for breakfast, add some turmeric to the juice mixture of banana, carrots and ginger. You will not only enjoy a new drink, but also bless yourself with some good health.
Well, these were the turmeric delicacies that have become a rage in the West. We hope we Indians do feast on these, after reading this article.
