Media was too busy to reckon
When in a country where a celebrity spat is overhyped and extensively reported in media, does a rape case in one of the most literate states of the country, Kerala requires five days to get media’s attention?Had it been the latest update in the Kangana-Hrithik legal battle, Sushant Singh-Ankita Rajput’s break-up or a video showing Shahrukh Khan and Abram, it would have been a rage in media. Also, post addressing the issue, the media ensured to make news out of the ordeal of the rape, which did give them some flashy headlines, but somewhere compromised the dignity of the victim.
Kerala's CM paid a late visit to Jisha’s mother
The media was not the only one to miss out on Jisha’s rape case, but Kerala’s Chief Minister seemed to give them a competition. Chief Minister Oommen paid a visit to Jisha’s mother Rajeshwari, in the hospital, on the seventh day. Maybe he was too busy in elections to spare time for acknowledge the brutal rape case.
Jisha was a Dalit
Casteism has been an inseparable part of our country and a person’s caste matters more than their work. When we, on one hand, cry for injustice done by the reservation system in the open category, why does nobody raise a question when discrimination on caste is done in violence and crime? Had Jisha belonged to a higher caste, would media and politicians delay to acknowledge her agony?
The need of Nirbhaya brand
It is true that the Delhi’s 2012 Nirbhaya case was one of the heinous crimes that had rocked the entire nation. But do other assaults in the country need a Nirbhaya franchise to gain attention? If Jisha was from one of the major metros, would she require a tag of Kerala’s Nirbhaya?
An opportunity for politicians
When on one hand, there was no protest or media attention for five days, to the Jisha rape case, the latter diving of politicians in protests and online support, is indeed a demonstration of a filthy political game. The politicians always rely on such an issue to gain appreciation in the public eye and in the Jisha rape case, they left no leaf unturned. Well, if they were so shocked and concerned about the brutal crime, that has shocked Kerala and the nation, then why did it take them long to come out and voice their support to her?
