It was at my cousin’s marriage where I came across this guy who had come from the USA. Dude, what swag he had? Not only me, but everyone there said so. Women around were drooling over him and their English, by god, don’t even ask. I felt like I was attending my English lecture back in school. Disgusted by the scenario, I said to myself, “Why we Indians are so obsessed with the Westerner's swag?”
Well, though I was annoyed, it is actually the truth of time, we Indian are struck with. We are not only in awe of the foreigners but also imitate them to the extent that we appear to be way too fake. Few things listed below demonstrate our obsession for the West and how much we embrace their culture in our daily lives.
Their lifestyle we follow
There has come a time where the west is going crazy for the Indian culture and have adopted Yoga and Ayurveda. But we Indians, on the contrary, are inheriting theirs. Be it the workouts, international cuisine, or the way of living, we are following the footsteps of the foreigners. While healthy lifestyle habits help, the ones like smoking, drinking, clubbing etc., is engaging our youth into unwanted malpractices.
Speaking English is a swag
Years back when the British introduced us to the English language so that they could communicate with us, barely they knew that we would follow English religiously. And today, not knowing how to speak fluent English is a subject of embarrassment. Apart from the academics, we need to be good at the language to crack an interview. Knowing English has become the sign of status and the ones who know minimal or no English are looked down upon. Dude, today even those toddlers speak English like a pro giving us complex.
When Game of Thrones fascinates us
Dude, konsa season dekh rahi hai? I’m already done with 4 and on the verge of beginning 5th. Wait, we aren't’ talking about any of our desi daily soaps, but the English tele-series that we are in a race to complete watching. But, there was a time when we would wait for the daily soaps like Dil Mil Gaye and Kaise yeh Yaariyan. But now, if you ever hear a youngster watching a TV series, it’s either the Game of Thrones seasons, Vampire Diaries and F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Also not seeing these will make you look "uncool".
Relationship and marriages go western
Years back, we studied revolution, and then came industrialization and globalization. But, today, Indian is struck with westernization. Gone are those days when we called relationships a taboo, but today nobody will ask you if you are single, but the question has changed to, "Dude how many relationships have you been in?". And then, the live-in relationship trend, which was once under the radar, but now has got an official recognition from the supreme court of India. Finally, our marriages are no more the old ways but have a touch of modernization. With arranged marriages nearly on the verge of extinction, love-marriages is the new trend and break-ups and divorces, a new fashion. Having a partner is the need of the time with no assurance of future. 'Yaar chalta hai to dekhenge, warna dusri mil jayegi' has become our go-to phrase. And the dating apps provide ample opportunities for the ones looking for "casual dating".
Those big brands we flaunt
From Adidas to Armani and Victoria Secret’s to Gucci, when the names itself increase our status then why won’t the brands do? Wait, I’m not talking about the rich, but these brands are flaunted by the middle class also. With globalization, these videsi brands are easily available. Also, the Hollywood movies and the stars we follow make us go gaga on their fashion and style. And why just we the commoners, do you know our Bollywood celebs are not only obsessed but also don the famous brands from abroad.
