Weddings: A little more thought and a lot more sunshine!

Indian weddings have a niche of being grand and usually remarked as auspicious occasions that are celebrated with a great fervor. Well, it true that weddings are a means of boasting of wealth for the elite class, but the middle class is no way behind as they too leave no stone unturned to make the big day a splendid affair. Though these weddings impart a mesmerizing visual treat for the invitees and of course a lavish spread of various cuisines, but on analyzing the expenditure done, one would go red with a shock. Like seriously, in the process of making just one day of ours a memorable one, we actually waste an amount that would have otherwise been beneficial in many ways.

Well, it seems like the country’s youth have to some extent realized this and rather opted for an unconventional wedding style. While preserving the traditional touch, the young generation is opting for a marriage that will make a difference to the society. Below is a list of some cool wedding ideas that would help you to save more on the unwanted swag, and rather help those in need.

The eco-friendly marriage

We all know that the health of our environment is deteriorating and needs our immediate attention. Now, it might puzzle you to think how could the environment benefit from your wedding? Well, then you should check out the pictures of this wedding.

Well, these glimpses are from the marriage of Shasvathi Siva and her groom Karthik Krishnan, whose marriage was an eco-friendly one. Shasvathi Siva, who is a devoted vegetarian, decided to marry amidst greenery, with minimal usage of flowers, dairy products and plastic. Both bride and the groom wore wedding attire made from satin which was also used to decorate their wedding venue, including their garlands. Being a vegan and a PETA follower, Shasvathi’s wedding dinner comprised of cashew nuts and almonds rather than the dairy products. Added attractions were the edible cutlery that had replaced the unhealthy plastic and the coconuts that had environment saving message etched on them. And last but not the least, amidst the many guests, some special mates of Shasvathi and Karthik had embraced the wedding to bless them with their wishes and these were their dogs and cats. Isn’t that a perfect eco-friendly wedding?

Some charity work could help

As already said, the amount you spend on your wedding could benefit the poor and the needy so why not donate in a unique style. Now as you get hitched why not try these cool ways to donate. One of my friends was getting married and like many, her parents didn’t want any gifts in return. But this pal of mine, being a charity lover, suggested her parents to replace the “Only your blessings will be accepted” thing to “Why not donate to this NGO and give us blessings.” Well, I was taken aback by my bestie's idea and decided to do the same for my wedding.

While I was still in awe of my friend's idea, I came across this girl Ravneet, whose wedding gesture was worth admiring. Besides her charity idea, she also ensured that she could make every possible difference through her unconventional marriage preparations. While the Mithai’s distributed comprised of honey, which was made by an NGO, she donned makeup that was done by one of the girls who got trained through an NGO. Well, it’s indeed a bold decision Ravneet took for her special day. I know you guys won’t believe it, but her snap above depicts her beautiful, like any other bride whose make-up was done by a professional.

Donating leftover food to an NGO

Now, the buffet spreads at our weddings is very lavish to suffice a gourmet’s stomach. But, do you know the massive amount we make is too much for our guests and hence a lot of food is left over. At my house, whenever, there was any function, we used to distribute the leftover food to our already full relatives for their dinner. But, this always irked me as I always told my mom to donate the food rather to the ones who are forced to find solace in the minimal or no food at all. Imagine if a small function would leave back extra food, then how much food would be left at a grand wedding? And if this food is donated, I believe a small village would dine on it once or maybe twice. Don’t you think it is a cool idea?

Lastly, if you still want a little big celebration, then you may try cutting down the wedding cost and donate it rather to our farmers, who are embracing death every other day due to the heavy debt and financial loss. Well, the Vadkes from Thane did this and donated about six lakhs of their wedding expenses to the Marathwada farmers by donating to the two villages Jalna and Nanded. Now, this was indeed a much-needed act of kindness for our drought-struck farmers. If like Vadkes, other parents did the same, then the dowry would rather benefit our farmers and others in need.

Well, if we all take a pledge to carry out at least one or two of the above ideas, then we would really make the society a better place to live and yes aid our environment also.
